Upon arrival in Ho Chi Minh City or Saigon, meet & greet at Tan Son Nhat International Airport and then, transferred to your hotel. In the evening, you will be briefing for the tour before the welcome dinner started.
After breakfast, begin a walking tour of Saigon most famous and historic city landmark – our local guide will take you through the heart of the city along Dong Khoi Street (formerly Rue Catinat), past the Rex Hotel, Ho Chi Minh Square, Municipal Theatre and Notre Dame Cathedral. Following a tour of the Reunification Palace (formerly was the Presidential Palace) and War Remnants Museum we drive to Cholon, the Chinatown district of the city where we visit the huge Binh Tay wholesale market and the ornate Thien Hau Pagoda, dedicated to the Goddess of the Sea. After lunch we travel to the Cu Chi tunnels located in an area known during the Vietnam War as the Iron Triangle on account of the strength of its Communist insurgency. The Cu Chi tunnel network was established as a means of waging guerrilla war against superior French and later American firepower. The network str etches over 250km and extends to three levels underground providing a remarkable insight into the method and determination of Communist forces during the Vietnam War.
The Mekong River is one of the world’s great rivers originating in China and making its way through Myanmar, L aos, Thailand, Cambodia and concluding its enchanting journey to the South China Sea in Vietnam s Mekong Delta. This morning we travel south from Ho Chi Minh City to My Tho, gateway to the Delta and Vietnam s agricultural heart. Known as the rice-bowl of Vietnam, the Delta is the most fertile region in the country, an d Vietnam s main source of rice and tropical fruits. From My Tho, you board your boat and travel to one of the islands located in the middle of the Mekong River. On the island visit a fruit orchard and sample some of the local products such as handicraft made from coconut trees, coconut candy,... then board a smaller sampan that winds along narrow canals to quite villages to see bee-keeping farm. You'll also have the opportunity to enjoy some local hospitality with some tea or rice wine, fresh tropical fruits and traditional folk music performance. A typical lunch of Mekong delta farmers on island will be one of the unforgettable memories. Return to Ho Chi Minh City by late afternoon.
Breakfast at the hotel and then, transfer to the airport for the flight to Hue on Vietnam’s central coast. Hue is a beautiful, romantic and welcoming city. As Vietnam’s capital throughout the Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945), as a center of Vietnamese Buddhism and scholarship and finally as the setting for some of the Vietnam War s most bloody fighting, Hue provides a unique window into Vietnam and its complex past. Today visit the impressive home of the Nguyen Dynasty emperors - the Citadel. Much of the Citadel was destroyed during the Tet Offensive in 1968 but is gradually being restored. Then travel by dragon boat along the Perfume River to the much-revered Thien Mu Pagoda, Hue’s oldest and most beautiful. Later, drive through the Hue countryside to visit the impressive tomb of the Emperor Tu Duc. Royal Dinner or Night cruise on Perfume river with Music & Folk songs performance can be organized optionally
After breakfast, travel to Danang via the spectacular Hai Van Pass. This drive is considered one of the most beautiful in Vietnam and takes you through a combination of both rural and coastal settings. Our first stop is the Cham Museum which holds well preserved artifacts, the best examples of Cham sculpture anywhere in the world from the Hindu Kingdom of Champa – the Kingdom occupied this area of Vietnam from the 4th to the 16th centuries. We continue south to Marble Mountains, a series of large marble outcrops that have acquired mythical significance over the centuries. The caves of the Marble Mountains have a number of sacred Buddhist shrines as well as a former Communist guerrilla hospital from the Vietnam War. From the Marble Mountains there are great views across China Beach an d the surrounding countryside. From the Marble Mountains we take a short drive around to China Beach for a well-earned swim at the former US R and R beach escape spot. From China Beach we travel further south to Hoi An. Hoi An was Vietnam s most active trading center over many centuries and has been largely preserved. The architecture of the city reflects the influence of Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, French and British traders. Hoi An is also the town where French Missionary Alexandre De Rhodes introduced Catholicism to Vietnam as well as the Romanized script that has become the standard Vietnamese script. This afternoon we take a walking tour of enchanting Hoi An visiting an old merchant house, the Hoi An Museum, a Chinese Assembly Hall and the Japanese Covered Bridge. This evening you have the option to join a cooking class at one of Hoi An s restaurants - optional.
Today is free for you to enjoy this beautiful town with its many clothing shops, colorful fish market and river life. You may wish to hire a bicycle and peddle around the town or relax at the beach or resort swimming pool.
This morning transfer to the airport for the flight to Hanoi. On arrival transfer to your hotel. A thousand year-old city, Hanoi was also the former French capital of Indochina which is reflected in its dominant architecture along the tree-line boulevards. Now, Hanoi is Vietnam’s gracious capital and one of South East Asia s most beautiful and engaging cities., Hanoi holds guard of the country's ideals while Saigon r apidly persues capitalism. This afternoon, you will be guided on a cyclo tour to visit the fascinating ancient, yet lively Old Quarter - 36 ancient streets where peddlers continue to trade as they have done for centuries. The Hoan Kiem Lake area - Hanoi s heart - is also a great place to admire the boulevards of French colonial architecture that contributes greatly to the city s atmosphere. Also visit the infamous Hanoi Hilton – Hanoi’s former central prison made famous first for the incarceration of the leaders of Vietnam’s National Liberation movement and later US Air Force pilots shot down over North Vietnam. The site of the prison was recently developed, however one wing has been retained as a museum. This evening, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a typical performance of Hanoi’s famous Water Puppets Show.
This morning we journey east (approximately 170km or 3 hours) to Hon Gai, the gateway to Halong Bay. En route pass fields of busy workers farming their rice using traditional methods of cultivation. Halong Bay achieved international notoriety as a key location in the French film "Indochine" starring Catherine Deneuve. The bay has assumed an important position in Vietnamese legend for many centuries however and continues to capture the imagination of visitors. On arrival transfer to the port for a magical 4 hours aboard your boat cruising around the Bay. Considered Vietnam s greatest natural wonder, Halong Bay boasts over 3,000 islands that jut out of the sea to provide a spectacular natural environment. We admire its beauty and scale before stopping at one of the many secl uded bays for a refreshing swim (weather permitting). We also take the opportunity to enjoy a fresh seafood lunch on board our boat. This afternoon travel back to Hanoi.
This morning we begin our look at Hanoi by visiting the Ho Chi Minh Quarter. Ho Chi Minh is without question one of the great figures of twentieth century history and we’ll take time to look at the life of the father of modern Vietnam. We'll start with a visit to the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum - set on the spot in Ba Dinh Square where Ho Chi Minh first declared independence from French rule in 1945. We’ll then visit the humble house on stilts from which Uncle Ho as he is affectionately known, ruled Vietnam until his death in 1969. Continue on to the intriguing Ho Chi Minh Mu seum, an amazing surreal exhibition of the life of Ho Chi Minh, set in the context of major events of the 20th century and Vietnams struggle for independence. We will also view the Presidential Palace and One Pillar Pagoda. We continue our tour by visiting Hanoi s first University - the Temple of Literature - dating back to 1070. This historical center of learning is now dedicated to Confucian worship. The rest of the afternoon will be free for your last minute sightseeing or shopping.
Breakfast at hotel and then, free at leisure till time transfer to Noi Bai International Airport for flight departure.
